Some states also offer financial aid directly to individual students, which can be need-based or merit-based. To find out about state aid where you live, refer to your state government website. http://www.csac.ca.gov/ has some information for California students.

Colleges themselves provide financial aid most in the form of scholarships or grants to many of their students. Some is need-based and some is merit-based. Students should contact the financial aid offices of specific schools and request information.

Other Types of Aid
Sometimes, award financial aid is provided by other organizations, such as corporations, labor unions, professional associations, and credit unions. In addition, some organizations, particularly foundations, offer scholarships to minorities, women, and disabled students.
