Understand Children’s Needs 2 Comments »

To understand children’s needs is must for good parenting. Only we as parents understand children’s needs, can we help children in a positive way and meet their needs as possible as we can, which leads to effective parenting.

Needs are demands of the body for physical and psychological well-being. We can category them into four groups.

For a person, if some groups of needs are not met, the person dies. People must have water and food to be alive. The satisfaction of other needs makes people’s life rich and fulfilling. Curiosity drives kids to investigate their surroundings and adults to become astronomers to explore the universe.

The four groups of basic needs are the following.

Physical needs for surviving

For example, people need air, water, food, sleep, shelter, clothing, and safety.

Children need fresh air, clean water, nutritious food, sufficient sleep and safe environment.

Social needs for mental health

For example, people need to be loved and to love, to feel a part of and to include others.

Children need be loved by their parents, need to play with others, need to show their love to others.

Curiosity

People want to know what they do not know.

Encourage children to explore and to act in a manner appropriate to their ages.

Self-awareness

Anybody needs self-esteem, self-fulfillment, and recognition etc. to realize one’s existence and value.

Help a child develop sense of self as a person of value and competency. Encourage the child to learn and praise his right behavior, abilities and accomplishments.
